Things to Know

A vibrant mural depicting abstract shapes and colors on the side of a building, enhancing the urban landscape.

Peralta's school day begins at 8:30am and ends at 2:45pm everyday except for Wednesday. Every Wednesday is a "Minimum Day" and school ends at 1:30pm. There are a few other days throughout the year when school ends at 1:30pm and those days will be posted on the calendar. Our Afterschool Program: P.E.A.C.E. runs daily from 2:45pm to 6:00pm except on "minimum days"  when it begins at 1:30pm and ends at 6:00pm. The P.E.A.C.E. staff have three professional development days a school year, families will receive advance notice when there is NO afterschool program. Every Monday morning right after drop-off,  we gather for a brief (15-20 minute) community assembly in the upper grade courtyard. It's a sweet way to kick off the week together with school announcements, student recognitions and special performances.

Morning Drop-off

Students should arrive to school by 8:30am. Supervision begins at 8:20am, please do not leave students unattended on campus before then (this is a safety issue & liability). Biking, walking and carpooling to school is highly encouraged. There are entrances on Alcatraz, 63rd Street, North & Dana Street. Anyone on wheels (bike, scooter or skateboard...etc.) must wear a helmet. Once on campus, anything with wheels should be walked! Bikes should be locked in the designated bike area next to Portable A.

  • Please use drop-off zone on Dana Street for ALL students arriving by car if you do not wish to park. The drop-off zone is staffed by Coach D and student members of safety patrol.
  • Parking: Our tiny parking lot only has 4 spaces and is reserved for staff, deliveries, and any car with a disability placard. Families who drive to school should park in the surrounding neighborhood. Please do not double park or park on North Street since this is a dead end and there is limited space. Parking a little bit away and walking in together can be a nice way to start the day. The Pet Food Express parking lot at Telegraph and Alcatraz will allow us to use their lot before they open at 9:00 AM.
  • Late arrival: Any student arriving after 8:30 AM must enter at the 63rd street entrance and be accompanied by an adult to the office to check in and get a pass to class.

Attendance/Absences

California is one of the few states that funds public schools based on attendance rather than enrollment. This means that understanding the OUSD attendance policy is incredibly important!

  • Excused Absences: Please notify our Attendance Specialist, Ms. Asha by phone: (510) 879-3145 *1 or email: asha.washington@ousd.org when your child will be absent from school. When a student has an excused absence, Peralta does not receive funding for the days the student was absent.
  • Independent Study: An Independent Study is available when families know their child will be absent in advance (e.g. your family is taking a trip while school is in session) and includes homework for your child to complete for the days they are absent. Each child has 15 days of Independent Study available to use during the school year. In order to set up an Independent Study, you must let Ms. Asha know at least two weeks (a month is better) before the period of absence so she has time to complete the required paperwork and collect the homework assignments from teachers. When a child turns in their completed Independent Study work Peralta does receive funding for the missed days at school.

Lost & Found

The Lost & Found is located next to the Library, near the front entrance to Peralta on 63rd St. Please be sure your child’s name is on all school clothes, backpacks, food containers, and lunch boxes. If it’s labeled with your child’s name, it makes it so much easier to return it to them! Items left in the Lost & Found at the end of each month are donated.

Lunch Schedule

The Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) serves double duty as our school cafeteria. Students walk with their class to the MPR for lunchtime followed by a short recess. Lunch is staggered by grade level:

  • TK & Kindergarten eat from 11:30 - 11:50 and play until 12:10.

  • 1st & 2nd Graders eat from 11:50 - 12:10 and play until 12:30.

  • 3rd - 5th Graders eat from 12:10 - 12:30 and play until 12:50.

Meals

School meals are FREE for all students. There's an optional breakfast & lunch provided daily. View the weekly menu: OUSD Food Services. The actual menu can vary from the published menu, so make sure your child knows they may be getting something different than what is listed.  Students are also welcome to bring lunch from home. After school snack is provided for all students enrolled in the P.E.A.C.E program (it’s listed as supper on the OUSD menu).

Pickup

Please pick up your child/(ren) on time. Students in the P.E.A.C.E after school program should be picked up in Room 10 (Dana Street Gate) by 6:00 PM. All other students are dismissed after school to the courtyards. Kindergarten and first grade students will only be released to their identified guardians. Anyone picking up a child should be included in the child’s contact information (updated in the Back to School Forms). Please let our office know if you would like to add someone to your child’s list.
